Dave Loder

BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design; MA Art & Space; PhD With Art Practice

Dave graduated with a BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design from Nottingham Trent University in 1998. Following his undergraduate, he worked in a number of award winning design practices in his native city of Belfast, developing a portfolio that spans the sectors of workplace, retail, hospitality, leisure, education, healthcare and transport. Dave returned to education to complete his MA Art & Space with Distinction at Kingston University, London, in 2008 and the following year was appointed part time lecturer in the university’s Fine Art department. Further pursuing academicism, he undertook doctoral studies at Ulster University, Belfast, to complete his PhD With Art Practice in 2014. He joined the Interior Design department at Glasgow School of Art in 2017.

Dave is an active artist-researcher exhibiting nationally and internationally in Spain, Sweden, Germany and China and has presented research on international platforms including the 56th Venice Biennale, dOCUMENTA(13) and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. His artistic research practice is manifested through sound installation, sculpture, text based artworks and public art projects, and concerns the fabrication of technical objects and procedures that deploy alternative linguistic aesthetics and space-time conditions. His multidisciplinary research is situated within the contemporary philosophical discourse of New Materialism, drawing upon discussions of speculative realism, object orientated ontology, agential realism and the posthuman condition.

Dave brings broad multidisciplinary experience of art, design and architecture to his pedagogy practice at GSA, encouraging practice led approaches that synthesize design to theory. Informed by attitudes that encourage the cross fertilisation of ideas, theories and methods between disciplines, Dave is interested in speculative design practices which critically address the body as a site of engagement with space, place and environment.

Dave’s current research concerns the category of the monument under the condition of the Anthropocene, and investigates notions of landscape, temporal futurities and the human-to-come. Proposing nonlinear paradigms that can interrogate ideologies of reproduction, this research seeks to address post-conflict narratives and speculative realities.
